That Thing Called Pregnancy Blues

Let's Continue from where we stopped the last time
So after that post, I had discussion a with a couple of female friends about the Blues, and I got different experiences. Just like one of my readers commented.

Infact a lady told me that asides the fact that her monthly cycle was missing, she couldn't tell she
was pregnant.  She didn't experience any morning sickness or blues. She sure is part of the lucky ones.

Back to how I shook off the blues, I consciously started watching comedy movies. I must at this junction, I appreciate NdaniTv for their wonderful YouTube channel that hosts very nice programs. I was initiated into watching "Skinny Girl in Transit", "Rumour has it", "Officer Titus", "The Interview". I truly realised what the Bible says about Laughter being medicine for the body. I was 'healed'by laughter.

I shouldn't forget to mention that during that period I found it very difficult to pray, hence I relied heavily on the prayers in church on Sundays and my reservoir of prayers.

Well, eventually the blues passed.Towards the end of the second semester, there was a turn around in my demeanor. I returned to my cheerful self.

Fast forward to July 2016, after the whole bruhahaha of Labor (a story I will never share) I held in my hands a very beautiful baby boy. The arrival of my baby would permanently shake off any residual 'blues' and put me in a state of complete happiness and joy.

I hope you enjoyed reading about my experience, pls share yours

Pregnancy Blues: My Experience

Hehehe...Happy New year to you all

I think its in place for me to say happy New year as I have been away from this blog since last year.

I truly couldn't help my being away. I had a personal project at hand that put me out of form for writing. I was pregnant and had writers block.

I have however completed the project  successfully and the deliverable  is a bouncing  baby boy.

Am  back now, feeling good and happy. I've got my mojo back to write.

My post today is about an experience i had during pregnancy. Something called pregnancy blues.

Pregnancy is supposed to be a happy cheerful and exciting time for women, but not everyone feels so. Especially during the first trimester, some women experience feelings of sadness, irritability and general unhappiness especially when morning sickness kicks in. This is known as the 'blues'

My Experience

I have to say that this was my second pregnancy hence I would call myself 'experienced'. So, it was all surprising to me that i was having the 'blues'. I mean, I was quite happy and in a good state of mind back then. So why did I feel down now? Why was i having felings of sadness instead of joy? Why was i crying unnecessarily?

I had very serious morning sickness during this pregnancy.I found it difficult to keep anything down. Always vomiting morning afternoon and night. I also had constant headaches...all this made me feel really sick and particularly helpless. Here I am with a toddler and husband to take care of,  yet i seemed to be the one in need of help.it was saddening to me that I felt sick at all times.

As a result I became eassily irritable.
I cut off from social media and my blog as well. I just wasnt in the mood to write or interact with anyone. All I wanted to do was be by myself.

I got pregnant during winter, so I used the cold as perfect excuse to stay indoors. That meant little exercise as well.

Occasionally, I had outbursts of anger and would lash out at my husband. He couldn't understand why I behaved that way, and even though i tried to explain to him, i knew he didnt understand.

The blues started around the third month of pregnancy and continued into the middlenl of the fifth month. So for those 2 months thereabout I wasn't in a good place.

One day I had a talk with myself, and I decided to find a way to snap out of the blues.

I resorted to music. I realised listening to music brightened my day. I wasn't listening to hip pop or the latest music, I started listening to oldies. Music from the 1980s and early 1990s.

Oh my, did I find music refreshing. I rediscovered Aretha Franklin, Anita baker, Michael Jackson , Majek Fashek, King Sunny Ade
And also Christian music from Nathaniel Bassey, Casting crowns,Tasha Cobbs and a host of other artists.

Asides music, I engaged in other activities that refreshed  me and gave me a new perspective to life.

Recently a pregnant friend said she was looking for the good in pregnancy. You know, that glow that most literature in pregnancy says every woman has especially in the first trimester. I laughed and replied that "she should keep looking, she'll find it soon".

In my next post I'll share other things I did to lift the 'blues'.

If you or any other woman you know have experienced the pregnancy blues. Kindly share your story. I'll love to hear from you.n

Halloween: For or Against?

Its Halloween on October 31st, and if you're Nigerian, you'll probably be wondering what the fuss is about?

I have never been a fan of Halloween. Especially with the hollywood horror movies set around it like The Amityville Horror. For me, it just seems to pass across a scary message. I particularly don't like the decorations and costumes like lighted pumpkin lanterns, scary grave-like decorations, skulls, graves, spooky webs etc.

Generally, i perceived the celebration to be negative, ugly and promoting the devil.. However, i never thought this celebration will affect my life, as back home where i come from,we don't celebrate Halloween..or so i thought, until i saw an advert on Facebook, advertising Abuja's Halloween FunFair & Picnic.

During the week, i had a discussion with my husband, and i said i was not going to allow any of my children to celebrate or partake in the Halloween. He however, challenged me to find out what it really is all about. Especially as i have a child and i know that he'll definitely begin to notice it soon, especially when he starts school.

From Wikipedia The word Halloween or Hallowe'en dates to about 1745[26] and is of Christian origin.[27] The word "Halloween" means "hallowed evening" or "holy evening".[28] It comes from a Scottish term for All Hallows' Eve (the evening before All Hallows' Day).[29] In Scots, the word "eve" is even, and this is contracted to e'en or een. Over time, (All) Hallow(s) E(v)en evolved into Halloween. Although the phrase "All Hallows'" is found in Old English

It is note worthy that Today's Halloween costumes are thought to have been influenced by celtic-speaking  countries. The Origin of Halloween have been linked to the Roman feast of of Pomona, the goddess of fruits and seeds, or in the festival of the dead called Parentalia, it is more typically linked to the Celtic festival of Samhain", which comes from the Old Irish for "summer's end".

Halloween's Influence
While searching the internet, i came across an article: Halloween and the Forces of Darkness. You can read it here"Halloween has its origin in the British Isles about 1300 years ago. In those days, there were many men and women who practiced a so-called “nature religion” known as Wicca. (The word “Wicca” means “wise ones.” The word “witch” is derived from “Wicca.”) The witches worked their spells and magic as individuals or sometimes in groups of 13 known as Covens. Sometimes the witches and wizards worked as a triumvirate or power of three. The female Wiccan was known as a witch, and the male Wiccan was known as a wizard. The word “warlock” was not used by witches to identify themselves. It is actually a Scotch-Gaelic word that means “traitor.” Satanists use the word “warlock.”

The Wiccans were worshippers of the “Earth Mother”, the sun, the moon, and stars. Witches do not believe in Satan. The Wiccans or witches meet every Friday night at a gathering called an “esbat.” They draw a magic circle with a six-pointed star in it called a “hexagram”, from which we get the word “hex.” The coven of 13 stand “sky clad” or naked in the hexagram and work spells by chanting and doing rituals such as “drawing down the moon.” The full moon is sacred to witches, especially if it is on a Friday. It is considered to be even greater if the Friday is the 13th day of the month.

Eight times each year, the witches celebrated a sabat and the ritual work and spell casting was always done on the eve of the sabat. The sabats are Imbolc on February 2nd, the spring equinox on March 22nd, Beltaine on May 1st, the summer solstice on June 22nd, Lugnahsaid on July 31st, the fall equinox on September 22nd, Samhain on October 31st, and the winter solstice on December 22nd, which is also known as Yule. "

OK. So from what i gathered from the internet, i personally do not trust the origins of Halloween. I also do not like the way it is depicted in the society today.

Personally (as PSquare sang), the celebration does not appeal to my sight. I mean, why do majority of people have to dress ugly and scary. Why do they have to paint their faces and look like ghosts etc.

Why does Halloween have to be celebrated with Witched, graves, cemetery and the likes?

As for me and my family...#IPLEDGENOTTOCELEBRATEHALLOWEEN.
Rather on Halloween, i would dress them up as angels, in white with beautiful makeup, and have a fun-filled family treat, something nice and entertaining.

I know a lot of folks are not going to agree with me on this. Seriously, this is my stand. What's yours on Halloween?

Mothers..would you rather be a sit at home mum or a career woman?

I was inspired to write this post after the recent kidnap case of the Orekoya boys.
Being a mother myself I could vaguely imagine what was going through the mind of the mother of these kids. She probably would be close to insanity while waiting for them to be found. Or while waiting for money so her family could pay the ransom fee.

To think that they were kidnapped by their nanny is disheartening. #marythekidnapper..as she became popularly known. Am pissed not only because she is a woman and stooped so low as to kidnap the kids put in her care, but also because she smeared that beautiful name 'Mary'.

Anyways, so i have been thinking..as a mother, would I prefer to be a sit at home mum, doing nothing? Depending solely on the income of my husband or given the economic situation would I continue with being a career woman or a career business woman? Just thinking ooooo...

Reason been that, the world is turning upside down and its getting so difficult to raise kids. You don't even know who to trust to help you with your kids.

In today's society, you find children being sexually assaulted by their supposed aunties and uncles, some are physically abused. All sorts of vices and ills are carried out against children nowadays, that it makes me scared and wonder.

To make matters worse, the economy is such that both parents need to work or do business to make life comfortable for those kids. So they leave the home early in the morning and return late at nights.

Some people say, let the children attend extra curricular activities in school to keep them busy in a safe environment till when one of the parent is able to pick them up...but is that the best? What about when they are on vacation?

For mums who have trusted siblings or relations they can leave their kids with..that's alright, but what about those who don't?

Like we say in naija ' man must hustle'

Have thought severally about this, and am still thinking.... Even when you're a stay-at-home mum, we still need help with the house chores and all....hmmmm...so we still need nannies or house helps.

What then is the solution? Without having to face the threat of a wicked house help like the Ugandan nanny or the kidnapper like #marythekidnapper?

Let's talk concerned women!

Mothers are gods. Do you agree?

It was one of those moments out of a several, where I got overwhelmed with this full-time job called Motherhood. In that split second, it crossed my mind that I am a god. Yes...I said it a g-o-d.

To my son, I am his Alpha and Omega. I feed him, bathe him, provide warmth, care for him, take care of his every needs. Whenever he needs something he crawls to me, and starts to talk in baby language trying to get my attention. Even when I scold him, he still comes back to me with hands stretched wide for me to carry him.

Now, isn't that what God does for us?

So therefore, I can say with all boldness that I am a god...and I like the feeling.

Now, don't go thinking am excluding
the fathers. Fathers are important. They are breadwinners and defenders of the home. Just like Voltron ( How many of you can remember Voltron?..."defender of the Universe").

Sometimes, I wonder what goes through the minds of these babies. I wonder what they are thinking. At times I catch my son looking at me, and I wonder....Does he wonder who I am? Does he know am his mum? Does he know the meaning of Mum? If he doesn't, then who does he think I am?

Anyways, back to godship.....I am of the opinions that mothers are gods. I mean, the way our mothers multitask...manage the home, their husbands, kids and business. I love the definition of MOM as depicted in the picture above.

But......I wonder where the strength comes from. I must say its innate. I mean, the demands of motherhood especially if you're a career or business woman.

Well....Kudos to all mothers out there. If you're one give yourself a hug...if you desire to become one....you deserve a hug too...and if you have one...give her a hug.

So, do you agree mothers are gods?

How Teetee's Getting her Groove Back!!

So, those who know me well, will tell you that I like yanga...and truly i do. My sister will tell you stories of how i used to try on her heels when i was about 8, and how i would do fashion parade with my friend and neighbour at about 6 years of age.

Sincerely, now am certain that if i had paid close attention to myself, i should have studied something relating to fashion... Anyways, so prior to pregnancy i had this beautiful figure..the kind you can call figure 8..then came the pregnancy and then...

Fast forward to now, i have lost over 80% of my pregnancy weight, but am still not there yet.
So i advised myself, that the best way to loose the weight is through exercise. Thanks to my dear friend Chichi who lives very close to me, and is also a keep-fit kind of person, i started working out.

Below are pictures of me during our workout last Saturday Morning

Naturally am not a slim shady, rather i would classify myself as a woman with curves...but after childbirth, i found out the curves where becoming too much...so i had to get myself together for some workout.

Mind you, asides exercise, am also on a diet...i try as much as possible to avoid junk food. I also avoid eating after 8pm.

So that's how am getting my groove back. Oh before i forget here's a pix of me last Friday...4 months post pregnancy. Don't i look fly...*hehehehe*

Got to go...thanks for stopping by

Getting Your Mumjo Back .Part III

Hello Dearies,

Another weekend is around the corner, and as i always preach, try to pamper yourself this weekend. Ensure you rest, and do something to enhance your looks. As mothers, we need to REST well, so we can be energized for our job role (Motherhood is a full time job). Our skin also needs the rest to heal itself.

So lets get back to our MUMJO gist. Like i promised on the last post, today am going to share some natural remedies which help ME to regain my skin tone and smoothen my skin.
Like i said on my first post, am a sticker for NATURAL REMEDIES, although slow to act, the results however, are lasting and without side effects.

I started getting interested in natural remedies from a very early age, and over time, i have found so many recipes that can be used for different skin issues.

Here are a few of my recipes

1. Tomato Juice/Scrub
Yes, the same tomato you use to make your stew, is VERY good for your skin. It contains lycopene, which is an anti-oxidant that helps to heal the skin, and reduce signs of ageing.

Tomato Juice
1.Slice your tomato in 2 and squeeze out the juice on your palm.
2.Apply this juice on your face and all over your body.
3.Leave for about 15 minutes and wash off with lukewarm water.
4. Pat dry with a clean towel

Tomato Scrub
1. Blend 2 fruits of tomato in a blender with very little water. (Please do not add pepper o)
2. Scoop into a bowl, and add 5 tablespoons of sugar.
3. Apply on face and massage in circular motions
4. Wash off with warm water.
5. Pat dry with a clean towel, and apply a moisturizer (Olive Oil)

Tomato Juice helps to clear spots, reduce acne and gives you a smoother, even tone complexion. For better results you can apply the tomato juice on a daily basis.

You can apply the tomato scrub 2-3 times a week, as this helps to EXFOLIATE (remove dead skin cells).

2. Olive Oil Sugar Scrub

Actually i need to mention, that sugar is a natural exfoliator, hence whenever you see sugar in a remedy, it is always used as a scrub. Olive Oil is loaded with ANTIOXIDANTS and Vitamins A and E. It is especially good for people with dry skin.

Simply applying olive oil on your skin can help your skin regain its tone.

Olive Oil Scrub
1. Pour 2 tablespoons of  olive oil into a clean bowl
2. Add 3 tablespoons of sugar
3. Apply on face and massage in circular motions
4. Leave for 5 minutes
5. Wash off with warm water
6. Pat dry with a clean towel.

Believe me when i tell you that, you would see the IMMEDIATE effect of this scrub, as your skin will be smoother, supple and glowing. This remedy is one of my favorite. i use it almost every week.

Note: You can store the leftover Olive scrub, by covering the bowl with a lid, and reuse as often as you deem necessary.

I have other remedies which can be used to LIGHTEN your complexion, REDUCE wrinkle lines etc, but i would only be sharing them upon request by you, my readers.

So if you have any special areas you need help..HOLLA at me. If i have solution, i'll provide it.

Don't forget to drop your comments and/or questions.

Thanks for dropping by...One Love !!!

Getting Your Mumjo Back Part II

Hello Dearies,

Am back with a continuation of the post i started last week. If you missed it, you can read it here.

Last week i started on products that could hep us mums and mums-to-be get our 'MUMJO' back after delivery. Today am going to be talking about some commercial products that i know to be good.

Please note that, I have NOT been paid in any way to advertise any brand, although that would be a welcome development .Hehehe!!!! Afterall, money makes the world go round.

I have tried these products and they are working for me. Howbeit, for those of you who know me personally, please do not expect to see me looking flawless, spotless, stretch-mark-less ( Hahaha...i just coined that word). I am work in progress.

So, here are some of the products that would help us get back our facial complexion, smoothen any roughness, fade dark spots and also fight ageing.( You may think you are not ageing., but here's news for you; AS LONG AS you've dropped 1 kid...SISTER, you have started ageing.)

1. MaryKay TimeWise MicroDemabrasion Set

I cannot explain why most women have rough facial skin during pregnancy, i guess its caused by hormones. This roughness is likely to clear off after delivery, sometimes it doesn't clear. However to get that velvety smoothness, i recommend this product. It contains an exfoliating tube and a moisturizing tube.
I use it (whenever i remember) and i feel the instant smoothness of my skin. Am certain with continued usage, i would get incredible results.
Its a bit pricey, but its an INVESTMENT for your skin.

2. Mary Kay Revitalising Mask

If you cannot afford to buy the MicroDemabrasion Set, you can use this product to exfoliate your skin, and then get another good product to moisturize. You could use it as a facial mask or facial scrub.

3. Black Opal (Even Skin Tone Brightening Cream and Exfoliating Soap)

Up until recently, I have been using Black Opal product. I remember i got my first product at a cosmetics shop in Marina Lagos in 2010, and i must say i loved using the product. It gave me skin a POLISHED tone, and made me look clean and 'ajebutterish'. Although they have changed their packaging, this new product looks improved. Currently, I am not using it, but the moment i lay my eyes on it, am going to purchase it and use it. For better results, you can combine it with the soap.

..................................................................................................................................
Bottom line is, we need to EXFOLIATE and MOISTURIZE our skin to get back that tone and elasticity. Some of us need to tone our skins too (Please toning is NOT the same as bleaching ooo!).

There are numerous products in the market you can choose from, just ensure they do not contain harsh chemicals which are hazardous for your skin. I would never recommend the use of any product that contains Hydroquinone.

Next week, i would be writing about natural products that can help our skin.

I would appreciate your inputs, suggestions, comments or questions relating to this post.

Thanks for dropping by.

One Love!!!

Getting Your Mumjo( Mummy groove) Back. Part 1

Getting Your MumjoMummy groove) Back.  Part 1

So are you a new mother like I am? Or are you an experienced mother whose had 2, 3 or 4 kids?

Irrespective of how many kids you've had, one thing thats specific to motherhood is the changes in your body ( Shape, Skin elasticity, Complexion, Size).

Prior to being pregnant and having a baby, i used to tell myself i was going to be one hot mama. I thought all i had to do was watch my diet and do some exercises..but Voila!!! I can categorically say am so wrong.

For most women, except those with exceptionally good genes, we have to deal with lots of things like; stretch marks, sagging abdominal skin, change in skin tone and extra pounds of flesh. While some women loose their sense of style and fashion because of their new body shape. Some loose confidence in themselves, especially when they look into the mirror and see those stretch marks.

So, my question is as a woman and mother how do you get your groove back? How do you become that trendy, fashionista woman you once were?

I once watched an episode of Guiliana & Bill on E Entertainment Channel, and she used the word 'Mumjo' while referring to her mum's youthful and trendy looks. From her interpretation, Mumjo means Mummy + Mojo = Mumjo.

From my point of view and little experience, they are areas that a new mum or a woman who recently delivered should focus one.

1.Skin Tone/ Complexion

Pregnancy greatly affects the skin. Some women have smoother, supple skin during pregnancy. They even become fairer and look more beautiful in the course of those nine months, but after delivery their skin reverses.

On the other hand, some ladies become darker, have lots of acne, rough face and look very 'ugly' during this period, and after delivery their skin gradually returns back to normal.

Irrespective of how your skin reacts during pregnancy, after delivery take extra steps to take care of your skin. I call it 'pampering'. Pamper your skin, because your skin is you.

Although i use commercial products for my skin, am a sticker for natural, home-made remedies.

Examples of remedies you can use to pamper your skin are Tomatoes, Honey, Lemon, Olive Oil, Sugar, Cucumber.

You can also use commercial products.

In my next episode i'll be sharing tips on the home remedies and commercial products you can use, and their effect on your skin.

If you've got comments or suggestions, dont forget to drop a comment.
